Let \(H\) be a Hilbert space and \(A : H \to H\) be a bounded self-adjoint linear operator.

  1. Prove that

    \[\|A\| = \sup _{x \neq 0} \frac {|\langle Ax, x\rangle |}{\|x\|^2}.\]
